Frequently Asked Questions
What Can I Expect In My First Acupuncture Session?
In your first acupuncture session your practitioner will ask questions about your symptoms, health history and lifestyle to get an overall view of your health condition and produce a Chinese medicine diagnosis. The practitioner will then discuss a treatment plan with you which will usually consist of an expected treatment timeline as well as the practitioners recommendations of the type of treatment that they think would be most beneficial. The treatment itself consists of very fine needles placed along channels of the body called meridians. Acupuncture needles are so fine that most of the time the sensation of the needle is not very noticeable, while patients who have not experienced acupuncture before might expect a sharp feeling, the most common feeling is a very dull ache or heaviness. Our rooms are warm, cosy with relaxing music playing and so we find quite a few patients fall asleep during their treatments which is perfectly fine! The removal of the needles is almost always quick and pain free.
How Often Should I Get Acupuncture Treatments for the Best Results?
This is a difficult question to answer without a detailed look at your particular condition. While in China acupuncture is often used daily, in our modern lives and time constraints this is an unachievable (and unaffordable) amount. The most common frequency for acupuncture treatments is either weekly or fortnightly. Our focus on Chinese herbal medicine at The Grove also has an impact on the frequency. By combining herbal medicine and acupuncture we can continue the treatment at home, meaning we can achieve results faster while reducing the duration or frequency of treatment. Appointments using a combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine can often be conducted every 3-4 weeks. Once treatment is completed it is recommended to check in every 6 months to a year to ensure your body is in balance and any issues are picked up before they become established.
