Steven Clavey (1953 - 2024)

Traditional Chinese Gynaecology

Founder of The Grove, Steven Clavey practiced for over 30 years, specialising in the treatment of gynaecological conditions through the use of raw herbal decoctions. His legacy lives on in the practitioners who learnt beside him as students at the clinic, studied from his textbooks and translations of Chinese medicinal texts, and ruminated the theories of Chinese medicine over games of Go.

After spending seven years in Taiwan and mainland China studying Chinese medicine, Steve started his practice in South Melbourne in 1986, then Russel St for 25 years, before moving the clinic to Hawthorn in 2019. His textbooks for Chinese medicine practitioners, which can be found here and here, are widely used at universities, as are his translations of classical Chinese texts. Throughout his rich and scholarly career, Steve lectured on the use of herbal decoctions at national and international conferences, edited a professional Chinese medicine journal with a focus on the use of raw herbal decoctions called The Lantern, and revelled in adopting a holistic approach to achieving positive health outcomes for his patients.
